The Guide's Role

The Guide's Role

In Montessori education, teachers are referred to as “guides,” emphasizing their role as facilitators rather than authority figures. The aim is for children to realize their full potential and develop their true character, with adults serving as supportive guides. These guides observe children closely to understand their interests and needs, then adapt the environment accordingly to promote independent decision-making and freedom. Self-awareness is crucial for guides, as they must understand themselves to better understand the child. They act as a bridge between the child and the learning materials, ensuring the child has the opportunity to thrive. Sometimes, adults unintentionally hinder a child’s progress, but their role is to provide assistance when needed and fade into the background when not. It’s essential for guides to prioritize the child’s perspective over their own subjective thoughts, allowing the child to lead the way in their development journey.
